Westminster Abbey London

Westminster Abbey London

A heritage structure and a great tourist attraction, the Westminster Abbey in London is a collegiate church of St Peter. A large Gothic Church, situated to the west of the Palace of Westminster, the Westminster Abbey had served as a cathedral from 1546 to 1556.

The London Westminster Abbey is also a place for the coronation and burial of the British Royalty since 1066. The shrine of St Edward the Confessor, who ruled England from 1042 to 1066, is in the centre of the Abbey Church. Also buried or memorialized within the grounds are statesmen and politicians, artists, musicians, clerics, lawyers, warriors and writers from every century of all the three islands of the United Kingdom.

The 1400 year tradition of worshipping the Almighty continues till date in the living church that is considered to be part of the Church of England. Barring Good Friday and Holy Saturday, the Eucharist is celebrated everyday at the stroke of 8 in the morning with the world famous church choir singing the daily services. The Westminster Abbey Choir School, trains the church choristers. The church invites all people of all faiths, an Anglican or a believer of another church to attend any services if they so desire.

The St Margaret's Church within the Abbey limit, also known as the Church of the House of Commons, is also worth a visit. Besides places to see within the abbey precincts include the awesome Chapter House and Museum, the Great and Little Cloisters, the Westminster School, the Westminster Abbey Choir School and the peaceful College Garden.
