Peter Pan Cup Swimming Race London"Mad Dogs and Englishmen..." except this is mid-Winter and, tradition being what it is, the very hardy members of the Serpentine Swimming Club will plunge into the icy waters of Hyde Park's lake on 25th December as they have done year in, year out every Christmas Day since 1864.

With temperatures close to zero, it's just as well that the swimmers braving the icy waters have the incentive of the Peter Pan Cup to compete for - this 100 yard Peter Pan Cup swimming race dates from 1904 when J.M. Barrie, author of "Peter Pan" presented the cup to the winner.

If you feel inclined to brave the wintry temperatures on Christmas Day at 9 a.m., a stroll across Hyde Park to the Serpentine is a good way to work towards an appetite for that Christmas Lunch. The atmosphere is wonderful and, to maintain the theme, you could afterwards visit the famous statue of Peter Pan in adjacent Kensington Gardens.
