Even though it is a replica, enjoying one of Shakespeare's classics from the rough benches of The Globe Theatre is a treat not to be missed on a visit to London. The theatre was built quite recently, as close as possible to the believed site of the original theatre in which William Shakespeare's plays were first performed. The Merry Wives of Windsor is a typical Shakespearian farce - arguably not his best - and was apparently written at the personal request of Queen Elizabeth I, who wanted to see Falstaff in a comedy of his own. The farce centres on marital mishaps, fat men hiding from those wives in washing baskets and a host of highly predictable but nevertheless very enjoyable puns that seem most at home in the informal atmosphere of The Globe. Christopher Luscombe directs and the cast include Sue Wallace as Mistress Quickly and Christopher Benjamin as Falstaff.Visiting The Merry Wives of Windsor:
