Diwali on the Square 2009 LondonThe meaning of Diwali is the "Festival of Lights" and this is a religious event for Hindus, in the main, along with Sikhs and Jains and has gained increasing importance in the capital, celebrated by South Asian residents and visitors alike.

Ken Livingstone, when Mayor of London, established the free celebration in London's Trafalgar Square and this has become an important fixture in the calendar. Trafalgar Square will be exuberantly decorated and will feature Indian music and theatre along with contemporary and traditional dances including the energetic Garba and Dandia. Visitors of all religions are welcome at this annual celebration of the victory of light over darkness.
