Richard Strauss's comic opera in three acts was loosely adapted from the novel "Les amours du chevalier de Faublas" by Louvet de Couvrai and from Moliere's comedy "Monsieur de Pourceaugnac" and is an imaginative and romantic depiction of frivolous 17th century Viennese society. The complex but comic plot is displayed amongst sumptuous set design and lavish costumes with the cast having to take extreme care to effectively portray all of the twists and turns of the deceptions taking place between characters. First performed in Dresden in January 1911, Der RosenKavalier comes very close to slapstick comedy with cross-dressing, wildly excessive romantic gestures, unrequited love, lechery and lust. Director David McVicar's clever interpretation of Richard Strauss's lively plot has already led to great expectations of this performance and of John Tomlinson, who portrays the mischievous Baron Ochs.Visiting Der RosenKavalier:
