The fact that the name Babylon does not come from some futuristic space adventure but was the very real capital of the ancient kingdom of Mesopotamia - lying largely in what is modern day Iraq - is driven home in this superb new exhibition at the British Museum. The exhibition begins with the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II, who reigned between 605 and 565 BC. Various artefacts and archaeological finds illustrate the city's history, development and ultimate demise as well as its enormous influence. King Nebuchadnezzar's Hanging Gardens of Babylon - built about 600 B.C. - are held to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and the city was also home to the Tower of Babel.
The importance of Babylon in the ancient world is shown with sculptures, historical texts and the clay tablets gathered in the exhibition at the British Museum.
Sadly, what remains of this very important ancient city - located about 55 miles south of Baghdad, has been damaged in recent wars and the exhibition serves to remind us of the importance of preserving this and other sites vital to the world's heritage.
