A DESIGN REVOLUTION

One of the UK's most influential designers will be celebrated this autumn with an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum (September 9 - December 5). Christopher Dresser was Britain's first professional, independent industrial designer. The first section presents his early work from 1850 - 1876 where he embraced the new consumer culture and designed ceramic, metalwork and carpets. The second part looks at the influence of Japan on his work following his visit there in 1876. Open daily, admission to the exhibition is adults £6, concessions £4. www.vam.ac.uk

RAPHAEL: FROM URBINO TO ROME
20 October 2004 - 16 Jan 2005
This is the first major exhibition of paintings and drawings by the great Renaissance painter, Raphael (1483 - 1520), to be held in Britain. In little more than a decade (1500 - 1513), Raphael transformed himself from a competent master of provincial church decoration into one of the greatest painters who ever lived. His remarkably lucid compositions influenced Western art up to the 20th century. www.nationalgallery.org.uk/

LONDON FILM FESTIVAL
20 October 2004 - 4 November 2004
The Times bfi London Film Festival announced this year's programme of 180 features and 103 shorts from more than 60 countries, showcasing the latest cinema from the four corners of the globe: Angola to Uruguay and Hackney to Hollywood Boulevard. From 20 October to 4 November over sixteen days and nights cinemas around London will play host to films and film-goers from around the world. www.lff.org.uk

ROMAN GOLD - A HIDDEN TREASURE
For the first time, a hoard of Roman gold coins has been discovered in London. At Plantation Place in the City of London, Museum of London archaeologists excavated 43 coins from a possible masonry-lined deposit box under the floor of a substantial Roman London residence. The coins were probably held in a textile or leather purse inside a small wooden box.

Worth their weight in gold! The gold coins in the hoard are the equivalent of a legionary soldier's pay for 43 months. The aureus was 95% pure gold (22 carat). The hoard spanned the period from AD65-174 and incorporated coins of eight emperors and two empresses. The coins were found clustered together, but have here been arranged chronologically. www.museumoflondon.org.uk
