Hampstead Heath London
London's ancient parkland covering nearly 800 acres, Hampstead Heath is ideal for a quiet retreat or an active exercise. It provides wonderful London views, especially from Parliament Hill, and now includes Kenwood House and a formal garden The Hill.
The Heath has various playgrounds and training track and offers many activities on-site. Parliament Hill, the park's focal point and one of the highest points in London, is also there. The name 'Parliament Hill' most probably came from the Hill being a point of defence during the English Civil War for troops loyal to parliament.
The Heath is very popular with sports activities. Apart from offering a space for runners, swimmers and active walkers, the heath is popular with kite-fliers. Hampstead Heath has three swimming ponds and two of them are ideal for swimmers.
Three times a year, the Heath hosts a fun fair. The British Rail station, Hampstead Heath is nearest to the fair. If you need a change from the Heath you need always walk south to Hampstead High Street where you will find a selection of fashionable shops and restaurants. Alternatively, Parliament Hill past the ponds and along the heathside streets will eventually lead you past the up-market properties of Hampstead to Highgate.
